What are the differences between the cross-style base plate and the direct-connect?

The primary difference between the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms, # RM-523193-5 and the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms, # RM-523193-4 are the removable arms themselves. The Direct-Connect style can be used with a tow bar such as the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain Tow Bar part, # RM-677, without the need for a crossbar to go between the two arms. The Crossbar-Style style means you will need the crossbar that goes between the two arms like the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2, # RM-422.
The Direct-Connect has the advantage of one less piece to attach for use. While the Crossbar-Style has compatibility of vehicle guards such as the Roadmaster Guardian Rock Guard part # RM-4000 that will not work with the Direct-Connect style. However, there is the option of Roadmaster Tow Defender Protective Screening, # RM-4750. I suggest the Direct-Connect style for ease of use.
