Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2013 Honda CR-V

Question:

I have a 2013 CRV EXL and want to tow behind a 2000 Rexall. The RV has a receiver but need everything else. Can you give me 2-3 recommendations, nothing fancy, just the basics. Tx, frank

A complete flat towing setup consists of base plates, a tow bar compatible with those base plates, safety cables, tow bar wiring, supplemental braking and potentially a high/low adapter. For the base plates and tow bar I recommend using the Roadmaster # RM-521567-5 and etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates - 2" RV Mount - 6K # e74ZR. The Roadmaster base plates are well known for their durability and the removable arms will allow you to keep a clean front end when you're not towing.

For tow bar wiring, the Hopkins # HM56304 is a reliable and economical way to power your vehicle's lights in conjunction with your RV's lights. This is a plug and play system that will tee into your vehicle's tail lights and connect to the RV's wiring harness.

For supplemental braking I recommend using the Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # SM99251, which is a permanently installed solution that provides you with reliable proportional braking for your towed vehicle. I do like using permanently installed supplemental braking when possible since they don't require setup and take down each time you want to tow, or get to your destination. You will also need the Roadmaster Stop Light Relay Kit # RM-88400 for your supplemental braking solution, which makes sure the vehicle brake light signal doesn't override the RV's turn signal. I also recommend adding the Roadmaster Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 to keep your CR-V's battery from being drained during travel.

The last part you may need is a high/low adapter. I've linked our helpful article that shows you how to measure to determine if one will be required to keep your tow bar level during travel. I've also linked another helpful article we did that outlines the other available parts options for flat towing your 2013 CR-V.
