If your Explorer has the 2.0l engine, it can only be towed using a tow dolly like the Demco Kar Kaddy SS, part # DM9713045. The Kar Kaddy SS is foldable so it's easy to store and won't take up huge amounts of space at a campsite. The hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent braking and will eliminate the need for a brake controller.
If your Explorer has the 3.5 or 3.7l engine it can be flat towed, this goes for FWD or AWD models. You'll want to follow the guidelines mentioned in your owner's manual.
For a Blue Ox flat tow setup, I'd recommend the following:
• # BX2632 Base Plates
• # BX4370 Blue Ox Ascent tow bar w/ safety cables
• # BLU37TR Portable Supplemental Braking System
• # RM-15267 Diode Taillight Wiring Harness
• # RM-156-25 Charge Line Kit to keep battery topped of while towing
Blue Ox says that the base plates will sit about 18-1/2 inches high when installed. If this has more than a 3 inch height difference compared to the receiver height on your motorhome, you'll need a high/low adapter to bring it within that range. I'll link to an article that shows how to determine which adapter you need, as well as to our selection of adapters.
