Choosing Correct Replacement Dome Lid for 14 x 14 RV Roof Vent

Question:

Im looking at two different RV Vent Covers. One size is 19.5x18.5x9 and another brands dimension is 15.73x15.94x7.17 but both says it fits vent that are 14x14. Does it matter if I go with the bigger size or would it be too big? I know its measuring LXWXH but just want to make sure the larger dimension would work for the standard 14x14inch roof vent on my camper.

Which two lids in particular were you looking at? Without knowing, it's hard to comment but I'd be happy to run you through the process of how to choose the correct replacement vent lid for your RV.

The first thing to consider when choosing a replacement vent lid is the size of the vent they're meant to fit. You'd mentioned that both vent lids fit a 14 x 14 vent, and that's the most common size so that's a good thing.

After that, you'll also need to consider the hinge arrangement of the replacement to ensure it's compatible with the existing body of the vent. There are universal fit, 3 point hinges, 4 point hinges or continuous hinges. You can look at the remains of the old lid or look at the body of the vent on the roof to determine this.

You'll also want to consider the location of the runner on the underside of the lid that mates with the lifting arm assembly. Most lids have the runner in the center, but some like the Fan-Tastic # FVK1020-19 Vent Replacement Dome have the rail on the side.

You might have a preference regarding the color and material the lid is constructed of. White lids let in more light than the smoke or tinted ones, so you'll want to take that into account. Most lids are constructed of polypropylene, but some like the Ventline # BBC0530-01 are constructed of polycarbonate which is tougher and might survive a hailstorm, but won't let a lot of light through.

I've linked to our selection of replacement vents, as well as to a helpful article that will walk you through the process of choosing the correct replacement. On the linked page that shows the replacement lids that are available, there are filters on the left side of the page that will let you choose the desired size, color and hinge style which will help narrow the options down to a manageable level for you. Then you can look through the remainder and check out the product photos to see where the lifter rail is located.
