Cargo Carrier With Raised Shank To Prevent Exhaust From Melting Items Being Hauled.
Question:
Hello, I have a question. I have a 2012 Ram 1500 Express 4 wheel drive with rear exhaust. I have a trailer hichmounted cargo tray that comes straight out of the hitch receiver. The problem Im having is since the exhaust goes straight out the rear of the vehicle, the heat from it will warp and sometimes melt through the plastic totes we use to store our gear. Is there a cargo carrier that is pacific for this type of vehicle that would prevent this issue? Would getting a cargo carrier that has the s or bent shaped shaft prevent this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I recommend an adjustable receiver adapter like the Patriot Hitches Adjustable Drop Hitch Receiver Adapter - 2" Hitches - 11" Rise/Drop - 7K Item # PH54FR. You can use your existing carrier and the mount allows you to raise it up to 11 inches higher. It has a 700lb tongue weight capacity. One thing to keep in mind is using this is going to drop the tongue weight capacity of the hitch on your vehicle so you just want to make sure your load does not exceed that amount.
We have three carriers to consider that already have a raised shank for your consideration. You may be able to use these without the adapter:
# M2205 has a 5-1/2 rise in the shank
# 63153 has a 2-1/2" rise in the shank
# e98874 has a 2" rise in the shank
