Determining Correct Shock Absorber Kit For Tandem Axle Trailer Weighing 7500-8000lbs Loaded

Question:

Hello, Im looking for shock absorbers to add to a trailer with 7500-8000 lbs when loaded. Can you point me a product that would work? There are two axles currently, but Im not sure if both axles need shock absorbers. If you have any insight I would appreciate it. I was looking at the Lippert LC281281, would that work for my trailer?

I would be happy to recommend a shock system for your tandem axle trailer.

The correct system for your application is going to be based on the rating of your current axles, since each kit is designed to fit a certain diameter axle, and going with a system that is severely overrated will actually hurt the ride of trailer by being too stiff and not allowing the trailers suspension to do its job.

Since you mentioned that your trailer has tandem axles you will need a kit that is designed for tandem axles and includes a shock absorber for each axle, so the Lippert Components Bolt-On Shock Kit w/ Heavy Duty Gas Shocks # LC281281 you were looking at that is designed for a single axle trailer will not work.

Instead, the most likely options are the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers - 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb Axle # RM-2460 if your axles are 3" diameter or the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers - 3,500-lb Axle # RM-2470 if your axles are 2-3/8" diameter.

Both of these kits will include shocks for each axle, and really do a great job at providing a better towing experience by reducing vibrations and bouncing of the trailer, and helping to fight trailer sway.

To determine which axles you have you will need to measure the axle tube with a tape measure or digital calipers like # PTW80157, but to find the axle capacity you will need to find the axle brand and serial number located on the axle tag.

If you can provide the axle capacity of your axles, or the brand and serial number from the axle tag I would be happy to confirm which kit will be correct for your application.

I included a few videos of the Roadmaster Comfort Ride System for you to take a look at.
