How the Shock Works on Trailair Air Ride and Flex Air 5th Wheel King Pins

Question:

Is the Replacement Shock for Trailair Air Ride and Flex Air 5th Wheel King Pins - Qty 1 Item # LC177223 actually a shock or a dampener? Should it fully extend with no force to compress or remain in that position?

The Replacement Shock for Trailair Air Ride and Flex Air 5th Wheel King Pins, part # LC177223, is a shock that also serves as a dampener for kickback.

What that means is this shock works in conjunction with the king pin's air bag to absorb road shock from bumps. This keeps the air bag from bursting. Then, after everything is compressed, it dampens the kickback (upward rebound) from the air bag to its natural position. This position is not fully extended like a traditional air bag suspension. The bag doesn't fully push everything up because it's designed to work with the weight rather than against it.

Put simply, after compressing downward from force, the bag will slowly return to a natural position, which is around midway for the shock (that also depends on how much the bag is inflated as well, of course). This makes it so movement upward or downward is cushioned.

I've linked to a video of the Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box, part # LC328492, so you can see this in action at around the 1:18 mark.
