Question:
How do you unlock the trailer brakes after the Breakaway switch has been pulled and now melted down. Just want to be able to drive my unit to be repaired.

The Hopkins # 20099 Breakaway switch has a battery in the main box. Then the breakaway tab is pulled out the battery engages the electric brakes on the trailer. The brakes remain engaged until the breakaway tab is reinserted, or the batter runs out of charge, at which time the brakes release.
Since a few days have past your breakaway battery has discharged. I would determine why some thing melted down and repair or replace those parts. I would also check the condition of your battery. If it will not recharge you will have to replace the unit.
