Portable Braking System And Taillight Wiring Kit For A 1997 Jeep TJ Being Flat Towed
Question:
I have a 97 Jeep TJ Wrangler that I flat tow behind my RV and Im looking for a portable braking system and a plug and play brake light system. After reviewing the Brake Buddy 3 and the Blue Ox Patriot, I have decided on the Blue Ox Patriot. However Im still trying to find a tail light wiring kit so I can use the RV power instead of the tow vehicles battery. Is there a wiring harness that you could suggest for my application?

The Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System - Proportional Item # BLU37TR is a great portable braking system. As far as tow lights, I do a lot of flat tow setups here and all of the portable light kits are magnetic or suction cups with straps. Jeeps are hard to use portable light kits on because there is no metal surfaces to attach the light. If you have a hard top you can potentially use the suction cup style which is the Demco Tow Lights w/ Wiring Harness Item # DM36MV which suction cups to the inside of your back window.
I recommend using the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit Item # RM-15267. The taillights on the Jeep only receive power from the motor home when the umbilical is plugged into each vehicle. The light functions transfer from the motor home to your factory lights on the Jeep.
If you are concerned about the battery, I recommend adding the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles Item # RM-156-25. This line connects to the positive post on your Jeep battery and runs to your six pole plug mounted on the front of the Jeep. When the umbilical is connected between the two vehicles, your Jeep battery will receive a charge from the motor home so it is ready to go when you get to your destination.
I have provided video links to help walk you through how to install each. The videos are going to be on different years however, the instillation is going to be the same with the exception of connecting the diodes to wires behind the Jeeps taillights. The wire colors are going to be different than in the video.
