Generally on the 1988 Toyota 4-Runner you will have separate turn and brake signals. If you look at your tailights the top is amber for turn signals and the bottom is red for brake and tail lights.

Using the Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter part # 118158 will allow you to combine the signals and allow your standard 4-way flat connector to have all of the signals you need.

When installing you run you left and right blinker to the converter as well as you brake light signal to the red wire. When the red wire receives a signal it will turn on both turn signals acting as your brake signal.

This is very common and will solve your issue. Enjoy!
