Do Sidewinder Fifth Wheel Wedges Touch the King Pin of the Pin Box

Question:

I installed a fitted wedge which I purchased from etrailer. It fits very good to the sides of the hitch. My question is that the wedge is about an inch short of the king pin and I am curious to what keeps the king pin from rotating in hitch. Does the whole hitch pivot? I did notice a couple notches in the jaws. Is this what keeps it from pivoting and how? Thanks

Expert Reply:

Wedges typically are a few inches away from the king pin which allows the jaw of the hitch to still hold securely onto it. The function of the wedge is sit far enough into the head of the hitch to prevent the pin box pivoting on top of it so that the Sidewinder arm pivots instead. So based on that it sounds like your wedge is installed properly.
