Roof Rack for Roof Top Tent on 2016 Porsche Cayenne

Question:

Hi, I want to install an cross bar system on my rooftop mainly in order to carry a rooftop tent. The car has a full scale sunroof. Since the tent can be heavy. I am thinking about whether or not that I want to get a roof rail installed first. Is the system for naked roof as strong as the ones for pre-installed rack? If there is a big difference that I would really consider to install the rail first for safety issues. Thanks

The Yakima Skyrise # Y07437 and Thule Tepui # TH37HJ lines of roof top tents are not compatible with roof rack systems for naked roofs like your 2016 Porsche Cayenne has.

Having a large sunroof you will need to verify with Porsche that your roof can withstand the weight of this even with the factory raised side rails installed. The minimum roof rack requirements is 165 lbs for these tents. If the factory side rails are supported and have a capacity greater than 165 you can use the Yakima JetStream Crossbars # Y00425 and the TimberLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars # Y33TR to carry a Yakima Skyrise Tent, 2-Person # Y07436 and 3-Person # Y07437.

The Thule Tepui line of tents is the same way. If a roof rack system like the Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars # TH711400 and the Evo Raised Rail Feet # TH710401 is installed to a supported side rail then you can install a Thule Tepui tent.

The roof top tents are very cool but since they weigh so much they need to be installed a very specific way to reduce damage to your vehicle and injury if installed improperly.
