Proper bow and stern tie-downs will keep your canoe from sliding back and forth on a roof rack. First, when the canoe is placed on the roof rack, you should secure it to the roof rack crossbars using tie-down straps that wrap around the canoe from one side to the other. these will keep the canoe from sliding side to side.
Next, you will want to be sure your bow and stern tie-downs are properly situated. They should both be pulling down and in. If you have both bow and stern tie-downs pulling down and forward or backward, then the canoe will have the tendency to slide forward or backward. As long as both tie downs are pulling down and in, the tension from each strap pulling inward will prevent the canoe from sliding forward or backward.
If you need a set of bow and stern tie-downs, I would recommend the Yakima Boat and Cargo Strap Tie-Down Kit, # Y04031. For an easily accessibly attachment point, I would recommend picking up a set of Hood Loops as well, # TH529. I have attached a video showing how the Quick Loops work.
