Does Longer Ball Mount Reduce Hitch Capacity by Same Amount as Hitch Extender

Question:

Hi, Im looking to extend my hitch to allow room for a bike carrier. I see that the hitch extenders note a 35-50 reduction in capacity, depending on the model. Is the reduction referring to tongue weight, trailer weight, or both? Does the brophy have the same reduction in the vehicles hitch capacity? EA40 Thanks.

Hitch extenders like the part # ST18 reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch they are installed in. This one in particular does so by on-third which is less than most of the other options. Longer ball mounts like the part # EA40 do not cause the capacity reduction. This is because there isn't the added movement of having an additional hitch connection.
