Question:
I have a 2013 Escape with the kickgate. Your literature says that the function will still work kick under a reduced area after the hitch is installed. How accurate is this?

According to Cequent Performance Products, the manufacturer of the Draw-Tite Class III receiver you mentioned, when the 2013 Escape with the auto liftgate feature first came out, the effective area of the sensors was reduced after the hitch was installed. The hitch has since been completely redesigned so that the hitch won't interfere with the sensors.
If you'll be towing with the hitch, you'd also need the following do complete your towing set-up.
Trailer wiring harness, part # 118566
Ball mount, part # D-4
Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3
1-7/8 inch trailer ball, part # 19260 or 2 inch ball, part # 63845
