Installing Wireless Brake Controller on 2005 Toyota Highlander
Question:
My 2005 Highlander has a factory tow package w/ 4-pin connector but i want to tow a travel trailer w/ brakes which requires a 7-pin connection. To avoid cost, time, and permanent rewiring to the battery, can the 7-pin unit be wired using the auxiliary 12v outlet on the drivers side cargo area, then use one of your wireless controllers?

It's recommended that the power for the 12V feed to power a wireless brake controller like the Curt # C51180 be drawn directly from the battery, and for good reason. A tandem axle trailers brake can draw up to 15 amps, but accorrding to the owner's manual, all the power outlets in the vehicle are on a single 20A circuit, so if you're using other outlets, there might not be sufficient capacity. Most importantly, if there's a short circuit in the brake wiring on the trailer, the wiring system of the vehicle could get damaged. Getting the power directly from the battery assures reliable power delivery that can't damage the vehicle.
I'd recommend the # ETBC7L install kit to wire the vehicle for the wireless controller. I've linked to some installation videos, one showing the Curt Echo wireless brake controller being installed on a newer Highlander. The procedure shown in the video would be just about identical for your 2005 model.
