Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2003 to 2012 Volvo XC90

Question:

What models of racks will work and how do I affix them to my car? I can also consider a front mounting rack. Will they scratch my car? Do the bikes have to be facing the same way?

I am not certain what year your Volvo XC90 is, so I looked at all model years from 2003 to 2012 and there are numerous trunk mount bike racks that are listed as a fit.

I have included a link to all of the racks that will fit a 2012 model year, but these are the same dating back to the 2003 model year.

If you follow the installation and fit information in the instructions for the bike rack correctly, make sure that it is not overloaded, and that the rack and vehicle are clean where the rack arms will contact the vehicle, you will not have to worry about scratches though it is possible.

For a 3 bike rack, I recommend the Thule OutWay, # TH56BV. I just acquired this rack and it works quite well. The best thing about it is the retractable cables that make installation or removal quick and easy.

If you will be carrying women's, children's, or alternative frame bikes, I recommend using the bike adapter bar # TH982XT, for greater ground clearance and to carry the bikes more level. I have included a link to a video that shows how the adapter works.

The bikes will alternate directions so the handle bars do not interfere with each other and for the best way to distribution the weight evenly.

Mounting a bike rack in a front hitch on the front of a vehicle is possible but you have to consider that the front axle of the vehicle needs to be rated for the extra weight, driver visibility will be reduced, and the bikes will restrict airflow to the engine.
