Can I Use the SUP Taxi Paddleboard Tie Down with a Thule Canyon Cargo Basket

Question:

Hi, Is it possible to strap a paddleboard to the basket with the additional crossbar? Also, would the Thule SUP Taxi XT attach the crossbar as well? I am able to strap directly to the corssbars on the basket, but it would be preferable to use the SUP Taxi as it would lift the board a little and provide more clearance in the basket. Regards,

I have a solution for you, but even with the 20" Extension # TH8591XT added to the Thule Canyon # TH859XT, the Canyon is only going to be 69" long and I can't imagine that you'd be able to fit a full sized paddleboard inside it. Additionally, the Thule SUP Taxi # TH810001 is not designed to fit on the bars of the Thule Canyon securely so that's not really an option.

With that said, both the Canyon and SUP Taxi can be easily installed and removed as needed, so you can just remove the Canyon cargo basket and put on the SUP Taxi depending on what you need to carry. Both of these carriers will work on round, square, elliptical and most factory crossbars, so as long as the bars you're fitting either of these on are less than 3-1/2" wide x 1-3/4" tall both of these solutions will work for you.

Potentially you could just use some straps to strap your SUP to the top of the basket using something like the Thule Load Straps # TH523, which come with padded cam buckles to keep your board(s) from getting dinged up. This is probably the most cost effective solution for this conundrum, but I'm not sure that it's the most secure way to transport your paddle board(s).

I think the best way to do this without an SUP carrier would be to just put some pads like the Rhino-Rack SUP and Surfboard Pads w/ Tie-Downs for Crossbars - Universal - 21-1/2" Long - Qty 2 # RRRWP03 on your existing crossbars and then secure the boards directly to the crossbars. This is going to be a better solution than strapping the board to the cargo basket and will provide some protection for your boards in the process.

I've linked some review videos of these parts for you to have a look at as well.
