Best RV Trailer Wheel and Tire in Size ST225/75R15

Question:

Our tow behind RV travel trailer came with tandem axle ST225/75R15 tires on factory 6 lug rims. We recently had two blow outs on the toad and were only able to locate a truck service center in the area with 225/75D15 tires in stock to get us back on the road. Upon getting to our destination, we were told they should be replaced. The recommendation was to move to 4 new E rated radial tires for additional load rating, safety and performance since our weight with contents is close to the max limit. However, other sources said that the RV factory rims are only rated for 65 PSI as indicated on the label affixed to the RV. That would mean we couldnt inflate the E tires to the recommended 80 PSI without risking rim failure and inflating an E rated tire to only 65 PSI virtually reduces it back to a D rated tire load rating. So which of the above are correct and if both are, what rims are rated to go with E rated tires on an RV?

Expert Reply:

A 15 inch trailer wheel SHOULD be easily rated for the 80 psi you'd need but the valve stem is what you'd need to make sure is rated properly as that's almost always the weak spot. With that said not all trailer wheels are the same so it's hard to for sure state that your wheels are rated properly although it would seem they are.

So if you want to eliminate all guess work and have a wheel and tire combo that will be very safe and reliable I would recommend the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire # AM10303, it has a weight capacity of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi and a speed rating of 81 mph for your tires. Then for your wheel, a Dexstar 15" White Spoke Wheel part # AM20532.
