Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon
Question:
We have been looking for a while now to find a class III hitch for our 96 Buick Roadmaster. Would you know a class III hitch that fits? Or can be made to fit? It needs to pull a 1972 Airstream Argosy of -empty- about 3500 pounds.

We have a class II hitch that will fit your 96 Buick Roadmaster, but not a class III. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" Item # C12009. We haven't had the chance to install this hitch on a vehicle, but it is rated for a 50 minute install and has some drilling required. You can see the installation steps in the instructions I have linked. This Class II hitch is the only option for your vehicle so provided that its 3,500 pound capacity as well as the car's capacity are high enough for your trailer then it will work well.
The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # 36063 and for a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19257 or use # 19258 for a 2 inch. And for trailer wiring you can use # 18252 to add a 4-Way connector to the rear of the vehicle.. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch are sister companies. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. The Class III hitches for this vehicle are all obsolete.
This hitch is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 300 pounds tongue weight. If the empty weight of the 1972 Airstream is at or near 3,500 pounds, you are likely to be over capacity once it is loaded and ready to tow. You will need to make sure you stay within the capacities of the hitch and tow vehicle as stated in the owners manual.
For a ball mount use # 36063 and pin and clip # PC2. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch use # 19258. For trailer wiring, use # C55352. I have included a link to the wiring instructions as well.
