First, you are going to want to check the owners manual on your 2010 Chevy Colorado to determine if it can be flat towed. I did some research and found that if you have a 2 wheel drive model with the 4L60E transmission, you would need a transmission lube pump kit from Remco to flat tow the truck.

If you have a 2 wheel drive manual, the vehicle cannot be flat towed. And if you have a 4 wheel drive automatic or manual it is flat towable as is. Make sure to consult the owners manual to verify the above information.

If you determine that you have a model that can be flat towed, there are 5 items you will need: base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, supplemental braking.

For base plates you can use Demco base plates, # DM9518171. The base plates provide a secure attachment point for the tow bar. For a compatible tow bar, you can use the Commander, # DM9511012. This tow bar also comes with safety cables.

For lighting, I recommend the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155. This kit does not require cutting into the vehicle wiring for installation though you will need to drill holes in the tail light housing to hold the bulbs.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest systems to set up and use are portable systems, like the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the RV is braking, reducing wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing in a helpful link.
