Can Lock N Roll Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler Install Forward of Old Coupler Holes on Trailer

Question:

I bought the Lock N Roll Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler - 336TS506 about a month ago and am just now getting around to installing it. I have an aluminum camper trailer with a 2 1/2inch wide tongue by 2 1/4 inch high. I dont know the gauge but it is very thick, close to 1/4. When I removed my old ball coupler I noticed the holes lined up horizontally but not vertically. The Lock N Roll couplers holes are about half a hole higher than my old coupler. Will it be OK to move the Lock N Roll coupler forward and drill new holes? If so, how far back should the first hole be from the end of the tongue? Thanks.

It's not uncommon to have to drill new holes on a trailer tongue to install a new coupler as most couplers have unique bolt hole spacings. That said there isn't an exact dimension I can give you on what you are asking for. Moving the coupler forward on the trailer frame would be what you'd need to do to install new holes. As long as both holes are being utilized and at least an inch away from the old holes (roughly) you'll be fine. You'll have to use your best judgment.
