Suitcase Mounting Options on a 2009 Ford Taurus X sel with Roof Rack

Question:

I have a Taurus X sel 2009 with a roof rack on top. How do I put a suitcase up there for a day long trip without spending an arm and a leg?

There are many different ways to attach your suitcase to the roof rack on your 2009 Ford Taurus X sel, but you will have to have crossbars that run perpendicular to the side rails. If you do not have crossbars, then I recommend getting the Thule SquareBars, part # TH712400, with the feet, part # TH710401.

The next decision to make is how you want to mount your suitcase to your roof rack. You could mount the suitcase directly to the crossbars and use ratchet straps, like part # 34413, or rubber straps, like part # EM06912.

You could also use a roof mounted cargo basket like the Curt Cargo Basket, # C18115.

Keep in mind that these options will leave your suitcase open to the elements. If it is going to rain at any point during your trip or future trips, then you may want to consider a cargo box or bag as well. A cargo bag is going to be the more cost effective option. I would recommend the Rightline Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag, # RL100S20. This will be considerably cheaper than a cargo basket or box and it will protect your suitcase and cargo.

Cargo boxes typically cost more than cargo baskets and bags, but are another option for you to look into. The SportRack Vista XL Cargo Box, # SR7018, is one of our most popular and economical roof mounted cargo box that we offer. I have attached a review video of this box for you to check out.

All of the roof mounted cargo bag, box and baskets that I have recommended will fit on both the Yakima crossbars or factory crossbars on your vehicle. Hopefully all of these options will give you a better idea on how you would like to proceed with carrying your suitcase or other cargo.
