Troubleshooting Intermittent Working EOH Brakes with 2020 Ram 3500 Brakes Applied
Question:
I'm having some trouble with my EOH Dexter system. When I apply the brakes on my 2020 Ram 3500 it takes a second before the brakes are applied or sometimes they don't come on at all. When they do work I get the appropriate power, but everything seems to be a bit iffy. Any suggestions would be appreciate!

It sounds like you either have an older time-delayed brake controller or perhaps some wiring problems with your current setup. It is my understanding that pretty much all time-delayed controllers, like the Draw-Tite Activator IV # 5504, aren't compatible with EOH systems which might be why it works intermittently.
If this is what you have then I highly recommend using a newer system that is designed for EOH systems as well. The Prodigy P3 # 90195 is a great option for a bigger truck because it is not only easy to read with the LCD screen (which negates the use of codes), but it also lets you store up to 3 different trailer settings for various trailering situations you might find yourself in. To connect this to your Ram you need the adapter # 3024-P. This plugs right into the factory connector under your dash so you don't have to splice anything.
If you already have a brake controller that you know is compatible with EOH systems then the issue is likely on your trailer side of things as you have a brand new 2020 Ram 3500. You can test the 7-Way on your Ram using a circuit tester like part # PTW2992 (see attached photo) but you will probably find some corrosion on your trailer 7-Way or some damaged wiring for your brakes. Look for any places where the wiring is pinched, exposed, or damaged and then replace is with 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 and Butt Connectors # DW05745-5.
Should everything look good to you then I recommend taking your whole towing setup to a shop so they can physically inspect everything.
