For your 2008 BMW X3 I recommend using the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit part # 119250KIT. This is our most recommended kit for vehicles that don't have custom fits. When installing there is no cutting or splicing of your factory wiring harness which I really like. You'll simple follow the instructions and match each connector to the appropriate wire then run the power wire to your battery.
To determine which wires to connect to have a helper go through the functions while you check them with a circuit tester like LCD Digital Circuit Tester part # PTW2992. As they go through the functions you can use this to identify which wires you need. The installation is straight forward and will leave you with the working 4-way flat trailer connector you're looking for.
