Recommended Hitch and Towing Accessories for 2019 Volkswagen Passat

Question:

I'm looking to install a trailer hitch on my 2019 VW Passat for towing a very small 4.6 foot trailer I use to get the lawn tractor serviced or take stuff to the dump. What all would I need.

For what you're using the hitch for, you'd be fine with a low-cost option such as the Draw-Tite Class I receiver, part # 24880 but if you were planning on also using the hitch as a mounting location for a bike rack or a cargo carrying tray, you might be better off going with a 2 inch receiver like what would be provided by the EcoHitch # 306-X7317. There are many more accessory options that are compatible with a 2 inch receiver, so if you were going to use the hitch for something other that towing the trailer you mentioned, having a 2 inch receiver might be worth the extra cost.

If you do decide on the EcoHitch model, keep in mind that although the size of the receiver tube might be larger than the available Draw-Tite or Curt hitches, but the towing and tongue weight capacities are still limited at 2000 lbs/300 lbs, respectively.

You'll also need a trailer wiring harness, part # C79KR for models with or without LED headlights. You'll also need a drawbar and a trailer ball. The exact combination will depend on if your go for the Draw-Tite hitch with the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening or the EcoHitch with the 2 inch receiver opening. For the 1-1/4 inch hitch, go with the # C45521 drawbar. For a 1-7/8 inch ball, use # A-80 or # A-82 for a 2 inch ball. If you go with the EcoHitch with its 2 inch receiver tube, use the # 2753 ball mount with the # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 63845 for a 2 inch.
