Do I Need To Extend Power Wire Of Hopkins Adapter 30717 To Battery If I Dont Need The 12V Power
Question:
In order to use the 7 way plug on a trailer does the wire for power need to be connected? I have the adapter grounded and the 4 flat plugged in but I wasnt getting a response from my trailer using the 7 way plug. I am not using a brake box or have any auxillary power needs on the trailer. The Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector part # 30717 does not require the black power wire if you do not have any auxiliary power needs on the trailer like you mention. You will to ground the adapter to a clean bare metal surface of the frame.
If your ground on the adapter is okay, check the ground on the 4-Way connector itself. If you are still not getting power I recommend to unplug the 4-Way from the pigtail coming off of the adapter. Make sure the inside pins of the 4-Way connector on the vehicle side are not bent. If you do see corrosion on the connector it can be lightly sanded off with a fine grit sand paper. If the corrosion is too much the plug may need to be replaced. If the pins look good, I recommend to test the circuits with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993.
Test each function of the 4-Way while someone activates the functions in the tow vehicle. Make sure you get power to each circuit when they are activated only. If you are not getting power to the circuits of the 4-Way then it most likely needs to be replaced or the ground is bad. I am not sure what your year make and model is so I can't go into specifics on the connections of 4-Way.
If you have power at the circuits, plug it back into the adapter and test the adapter pins for power with the circuit tester. I have attached a diagram that shows the pin orientation. If you don't have power at the 7-way plug and you did on the 4-Way the Hopkins plug is defective.
