What Type of Trailer Wiring Connector Typically is Used For Charging Trailer Battery

Question:

I see you recommended a 10 guage wire and 30 amp breaker for charging a trailer battery. Can you recommend a good connector to go between the trailer and towing vehicle? Also is grounding to the tow vehicle frame good enough rather than running a ground all the way back to the tow vehicle battery?

Typically the 7-way trailer connector style is the best and easiest way to carry a 12 volt charge circuit from the tow vehicle to a trailer battery. Most likely you currently have a 4-way connector on the trailer and tow vehicle so what you'd want is the kit part # ETBC7L which will convert the 4-way to a 7-way and gives you a charge line and breaker like you'd need.

Then on the trailer we have the 7-way upgrade kit part # HS381-9000 which comes with everything you'd need to upgrade the 4-way on the trailer to a 7-way as well. Only thing else you'll want is a length of 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 (sold by foot) to go from the box to the battery.

On a 7-way the pin that carries the 12 volt circuit is the one in the 1:00 position.
