The good news is that most vehicles have enough space on the rear of the frame to have a trailer hitch mounted on them. The even better news is that your 2016 VW Golf has the holes already drilled in the frame to make installing a hitch a bit easier.

I recommend going with the Curt Class I hitch # C11412, which will provide you with a hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver opening and the ability to carry a variety of hitch mounted accessories like bike carriers.

If you're also looking for a bike rack that is compatible with your new trailer hitch, have a look at the Thule Camber # TH9058. This is a great wallet friendly, yet still quality hitch mounted rack. It has the ability to carry up to 90-lbs worth of bikes and offers the same tilt-away from the rear of the vehicle as the high priced hanging racks, which will allow you to open your hatch back with the bikes on.
