How To Tell If a Ford Transit Has the Tow Package and Parts Needed To Add It

Question:

The Ford Transit if equipped with the factory tow package would have came with both a trailer hitch and trailer connector and they would both be located directly under the rear bumper so odds are you do not have either because they are not hard to locate. The factory tow package was also not a very common option but I can provide you with everything to add this on your own at a fraction of the price. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75912 is a confirmed fit for a 2015 - 2019 T150/T250/T350 and features a bolt-on installation. I have attached both an install photo and video for you. Then for a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 22114 which offers plug and play install and can be mounted to the trailer connector bracket on the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver using the Mounting Bracket for 7-Way part # 18138. The Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness also allows for a plug and play brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160 if needed.

Good morning, Sirs. I would like to install a Class IV hitch on our 2017 Ford Transit T350, GVWR of 9000lbs, GRWR (rear) is 5730lbs. Need a brake controller, too. my trailer would haul a vehicle in the range of 4500 to 5500lbs--what is your advice? points i am dwelling on...1) will I have van and then, by extension, trailer sway, that I probably wouldnt have with a F250HD? (wondering if the hitch costs are worth it for this van)....2) I am definitely going to use a weight distributing hitch kit--does that affect your calculus /advice?

For your Ford Transit T350 I recommend the Curt Class IV Hitch # C14012, which will provide more than enough capacity for what you plan on pulling. If the Transit doesn't have the tow package, then the Tekonsha # 22114 will work perfectly to provide everything needed to install a fully-functional 7-Way connector. It also includes the needed wiring to install a brake controller like the excellent Prodigy P2 # 90885. Especially if you plan on using a weight distribution system, I can't imagine you'll have more sway than you would when towing with the F-250. In fact it should honestly be better with the Transit.

Certainly, the trailer wiring harness you asked about is only needed for a trailer so that might be where the confusion lies. I am not entirely sure if you are wanting to use the trailer hitch to tow a small trailer with bikes or to use a hitch mounted bike rack but nonetheless have attached both options for you below. Small Trailer: Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75912 T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118643 Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat part # 18144 Ball Mount Kit part # 989900 Bike Rack: Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75912 Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack part # KU74FR
