How to Stop Trailer Rattle When Towing Light Weight Kayak and Trailer
Question:
Hello, I tow a Wesco kayak trailer with one relatively heavy about 120-130 lbs kayak on the top. Ive noticed a lot rattling, especially when accelerating from 40-60 mph, though it occurs at higher and lower speeds without accelerating, but to a much less degree. The rattle even occurs on newly paved roads. Ive made sure there everything is tied down on the trailer and it still makes the noise. Ive spun the tires and didnt see much that would indicate bearings. There also doesnt appear to be any wobble when I spin the tires. This weekend I plan to check the lug nuts to make sure they are tight, and check the tire walls. Do you have any suggestions of what it could be, how to diagnose/trouble shoot, and what parts or accessories to order to fix? Ive attached two photos of the trailer/kayak set up to look at. Thank you!

Judging by what you were looking at before you asked this question, I think you're on the right track; it would seem to me that what you're hearing is rattling coming from the ball mount and the receiver. You could fix this with an anti-rattle locking hitch pin like the # SHP2082 which is designed for 1-1/4" receivers or you can use the Anti-Rattle Locking Pin # 63232 if you have a 2" receiver.
I think the best solution for you if you've got a 2" receiver is the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 , since it stops the rattle by creating a more snug connection between the receiver and ball mount by pulling the 2 parts together and creating what almost is a wedge to secure them. You could even pair this with an anti-rattle lock for the maximum combination of security and quiet!
