How To Use a 5th Wheel Hitch On Both a Short Bed Ford Without Pucks and a Long Bed Ford With Pucks

Question:

I’m towing a 14,000lb camper. I have a 2017 F350 8ft bed with the factory puck system. I also have a 2008 F250 6.5ft bed with a goose neck ball. I was wondering if there was a hitch I can buy and use in both trucks. Even if I have to remove the goose neck and replace it with traditional bed rails. Also I have heard the the slider hitch ride horrible compared to the stationary hitch. Have they improved over the years? Thank you!

Yes, I do have a 5th wheel hitch you can use in both trucks. The Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16541 for sliding or part # C16140 for fixed has my vote as the dual interlocking jaw system grips the king pin tightly therefore you will have very little movement which translates to a smoother ride. The one pin head removal system also allows for one person to remove and install the trailer hitch by themselves. The slider option can be used in either truck no problem but if you were to use the fixed hitch in the short bed then you might have reduced turning clearance. There would be no difference in ride quality between the sliding and fixed options as they both use the same head and center section.

In order to use either hitch on the long bed model with pucks you will need either the Reese Elite Series Underbed Rail Adapter part # RP30156 or the Curt OEM 5th-Wheel Hitch Legs part # C16020 for slider or part # C16017 for fixed. In order to use either hitch on the short bed model without pucks so could use the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for B&W Turnoverball part # 16310 if you have a B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch, the Curt X5 5th-Wheel Base Rail Adapter Plate for EZr Double Lock part # C16220 if you have a Curt EZr Double Lock Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch, or the Curt X5 5th Wheel Base Rails Adapter for Curt Double Lock part # C16210 if you have a Curt Double Lock, Flip and Store Underbed Gooseneck Hitch. Otherwise, you will need to remove your gooseneck hitch and use the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ford part # C16448-204.
