Circuit Breakers to Install Brake Controller in 2014 Jeep Wrangler JKU With Factory Tow Package

Question:

I want to tow a small RV with my 2014 Jeep Wrangler JKU. I have a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller connected to MOPAR OEM 7 pin harness 82210214AB. This harness connects directly to the 12V power without a circuit breaker or fuse. When using controllers manual override switch, I smelled smoke and fried the vehicles wiring, brake lights and skid control warning always on. Did this occur as a result of there being no circuit breaker/fuse? If not, do you know what caused it?

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you are having and I can tell you that on your 2014 Jeep Wrangler JKU with the factory tow package, you are going to need circuit breakers when using a brake controller.

You will need the Wiring Kit for Electric Trailer Brake Controllers # 5506 which comes with wire, circuit breakers and attaching ring terminals and butt connectors to properly install a brake controller such as the Prodigy P3 # 90195. It has a 40 amp breaker for the 12 volt of your 7-way and you will use the 30 amp breaker for the power to your brake controller (you will not use the included 20 amp breaker). I have added a link to a video install for you of this kit on a Wrangler Unlimited which will be similar to yours that I recommend checking out.

I can't say for sure this had anything to do with the issue experienced, as it could be a number of different things and the only way to know for certain is to take it to a Jeep dealer or trusted mechanic and have them take a look, particularly because you have warning lights always on.
