4-Way to 5-Way for 2020 Hyundai Palisade to Be Able to Tow Trailer With Surge Brakes
Question:
I test drove a 2020 Hyundai Pallisade Limited AWD. Its a great vehicle, except that it only has a 4 pint trailer connector. I need a flat 5 pin connector to lockout surge brakes when in reverse. Will LED backup light supply enough power to lock out surge brakes when in reverse? Is there a way to do this without it looking like a hack job? The Pallisade may be Hyundais first vehicle that will tow 5,000 pounds. The engineers did a nice job on the rest of the SUV, but by not including wiring for 5 pin surge or 7 pin electric brakes, showed their lack of experience with towing. Because of this issue, I may buy a different vehicle.

Expert Reply:
Reverse lockout solenoids barely draw any amperage to activate so a reverse light circuit that uses LED lights like the 2020 Hyundai Palisade would not be an issue with a 4-way to 5-way adapter like the part # 20036. Now for the install it would be up to you how professional you want it to look but it's definitely possible to make it look professional. It would be just a matter of finding the reverse light circuit in the most convenient location to allow this happen and then taking the time to route the wiring in a way that's concealed and safe. I wish there was a more specific advice I could give to help with that.
