Can Malone AirFlow Crossbars Be Used with Other Brand Cargo Boxes
Question:
Greetings, Earlier this year,I purchased a set of Malone AirFlow2 Crossbars from trailer for my Ford Escape. As winter is approaching, I need to purchase a cargo box for skis. I am unable to find any definitive answer as to whether or not I will be able to use these crossbars with brand products from places like Thule, Yakima, or SportRack. Any information or guidance you might be able to provide, would be most helpful. Thank you,

The Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack # MPG215 for your 2013 Ford Escape features standard sized aero-style crossbars that can absolutely be used to mount just about any brand and model cargo box, including those from Thule, Yakima, and SportRack. Cargo boxes are pretty universal in terms of mounting to roof rack crossbars so the only thing you will want to check is rear hatch clearance if you're looking at a longer unit for your skis.
A great option in particular for transporting and protecting your skis is the Yakima SkyBox NX 16 # Y95AV. This carrier provides up to 16 cubic feet of storage space, can handle skis that are up to 175 cm long which is about 68.89 inches, and features a dual-side-opening lid for easy access on either side of your Escape. Integrated locks will help protect your investments and the overall aerodynamic design helps to reduce wind drag.
To ensure this box won't interfere with the rear hatch from opening you will just want to take a quick measurement from the center of your front Malone crossbar back to the line where the roof and hatch meet. As long as this measurement is at least 47 inches there won't be any interference.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
