Installation of Progressive Dynamics Transfer Switch in 2016 Newmar Dutch Star RV

Question:

Hi, I have a 2016 Newmar Dutch Star with this transfer switch. My go to guy at Newmar feels that our current unit is not switching since when I go from 50 amp shore power with the AC units on, to generator, nothing transfers to the generator. Our only RV dealership here is DISMAL! I’m wondering if you feel this is a pretty simple swap out and I can do it myself. They kept our coach for 3 weeks during the last repair and we are scheduled to travel at the end of September. I’m assuming that if I have no shore power attached and no generator running, then the transfer switch will be dead, and it would be a matter of removing existing wiring and re applying it to the new unit. Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I can send you photos of our current unit. It is mounted right next to our shore power line reel. Thanks in advance for your help.

I think that your level of comfort in doing this repair lies with your level of comfort in doing electrical work-if you'd be comfortable doing electrical work at your home, this probably isn't a huge undertaking. If it's not something that would normally be in your wheelhouse, I would rely on someone with electrical experience to complete this installation.

With that being said, if you do decide to take this one on, I also recommend disconnecting any batteries as well- those are going to also supply power to the RV. Test your appliances in the RV and make sure none of them are getting power before you start this, just to be safe. The installation instructions aren't the most detailed on the Progressive Dynamics Transfer Switch # PD52 but considering that there is existing equipment already wired in the same manner, you'll have a good guide to use.
