Curt Stabilizing Strap Still Required for Curt C11473 Class I Hitch on 2017 Toyota Prius

Question:

Application: 2017 Toyota Prius Two - 4dr Hatchback - Thule Apex XT 2 Part#9024XT. I am interested in Curt Part# C11473 and noted that the installation instructions recommendinch the use of 18050 Stabilizing Straps for all non-trailer/wheel-less loads such as a bike rack. I am also interested in Draw-Tite Part# 24966. I reviewed the installation instructions for this hitch and did not find any recommendationinch for the use of Stabilizing Straps. Can you tell me why it is necessary to use Stabilizing Straps on the Curt, but not on the Draw-Tite. Is it mandatoryinch to use the Straps for the Curt hitch? If I dont use the Straps on the Curt hitch does this affect the warranty? I am concerned that the Stabilizing Straps will make the installation too rigid which could damage the Hitch Receiver. Also, attaching the Straps could scratch the paint on the Rear Tailgate/Trunk Lid.

Helpful Expert Reply:

Curt has recently changed their stance on requiring the # 18050 stabilizing strap. At one time, using the strap was a requirement for their warranty, but that is no longer the case. The strap is no longer required.
