Towing Weight Max for Gooseneck to 5th Wheel Hitch with Additional Towed Dinghy
Question:
Hi, my 5th wheel is a 42foot 2018 Hartland cyclone M3600 its 17,000 gvwr, hitch weight 3,375. We are also pulling a 2015 Ford flex curb weight 4,828 lbs. + a car trailer I think is 1,900 lbs. Im not sure how to figure the size of the hitch. If I add all this up its 24,050 lbs. Is that the proper way for sizing up ? If so is the 25,000 lbs. Hitch good or should I go to a 30,000 lbs. 5 th wheel hitch ?

Yes. That is the correct way to determine your load, but you would also need to consider any cargo that would possibly be carried in the towed vehicle, as well as anything else behind the rear axle of your truck and add that to your calculation. Adding the trailer towed behind the 5th wheel certainly throws a kink in the recommendation of the Demco Recon # DM8550045 . You would definitely need a 5th wheel hitch that is capable of hauling up to 25k. The traditional Gooseneck to 5th Wheel adapter Hitches we carry only go up to 22k and the other caveat, since you have an F-550 flatbed, is that you're not going to be able to use any traditional installation kit.
I recommend going with the Reese # RP30054 which is a 30k hitch that is specially designed for towing loads like this. This is a dual jaw 5th wheel hitch with a low profile to compensate for it being mounted on a flat bed truck. The caveat is that in order to install this hitch, you'll need something fabricated to have it tied into the frame of the truck to support towing.
