Gaining Access to Yakima SkyBox with Broken Key Stuck Inside Lock Core

Question:

How to replace the latch/handles when box is locked? Hi, My skybox is locked and the key broke off in the lock. Im unable to remove the broken part from the lock core, so replacing the core wont help. How can I replace both latches when locked? Do I first buy the a replacement key so I can open one half, or is there an easier way? Thanks!

Your best option for replacing the SuperLatch Handle Assemblies # Y8880348 on your Yakima SkyBox will be to try and remove that broken key. What I recommend doing is purchasing a key extractor from a local hardware store. These small and inexpensive metal tools/hooks can be used to fish out the metal key piece that's stuck inside the core.

Once you have the key removed it's just a matter of obtaining a replacement so you can unlock the box and replace the latches if needed. If you can tell me your key number I will be happy to recommend the correct replacement.

I did reach out to my contact at Yakima as well regarding your situation and she agreed that this was the best route to take. They strongly advise against drilling the lock core out (which would be your only other option if you can't remove the broken key) as you can easily damage the lock housing when doing this, which isn't a replaceable part.
