Trouble Getting Locking Handle To Engage on Demco Hijacker Autoslide

Question:

Hi. I bought the 6026 plate and fitted in reese airborne pin box. It fitted good, was the right size. However, hooking up on the demco auto glider hitch is not so easy. I read somebody else asking the same question where the locking handle on the hitch doesnt engage. Same with mine, you have to try multiple times to get that perfect angle to get ballpin in fully and allow locking handle to automatically engage. Sometimes it takes abt an hour. Can I grind the wedge on the locking plate a little bit on both sides to get a bit of slack? And is it possible to loosely fit the plate first then hook up then tighten up? Or widen the bolt hole in the locking plate to move the plate a bit back on the pin box which will allow the hitch to slide back few more millimeters to allow the handle to lock in. Asking for your views. Thanks

I spoke with Demco about the issues you are having with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide Locking Plate part # DM6026 on your Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch like part # DM8550034 and they informed me that this is usually caused from trying to couple the trailer nose high. The skid plate on the pin box needs to be about 1/2" below the skid plate on the 5th wheel hitch and you need to be as straight as possible. This is all further explained on page 8 of your owner's manual.

I also asked about adjusting the locking plate but this unfortunately cannot be done nor can I recommend you make any modifications to this.
