Can a Toyota Brake Controller Wiring Adapter be used on a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser with Factory 4-Way
Question:
I have a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser with OEM wiring harness installed. I recently ordered #ETBC7 as recommended by etrailer. Wondering if part #3040-P would make installation easier since the OEM connector is already under the dash? Fewer wires to run the lehgth of the truck??

If your 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser does have the factory brake controller wiring connector under the dash, and the power and brake light circuits are active in the connector, and the trailer brake feed circuit is ran to the rear of the vehicle where you can find it, then you most likely would be able to use the Toyota Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, # 3040-P, if the male connector on the FJ is a mate for the female connector on the harness.
To test, first, make sure there is 12 volt power on the black wire going into the brake controller. If there is no power going into the unit you will need to hard wire your FJ.
Next, check the red wire for power when the brake pedal is pressed. If there is no power when the pedal is pressed, you will need to sever the red wire and tap into the wire at the brake pedal that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Finally, if you do not have the trailer brake output wire connected to the blue wire at the 7-Way adapter, you will need to sever the blue wire at the brake controller and run a 10 gauge wire, # 10-1-1, to the back of the vehicle and connect it.
Our information shows that the 2008 FJ is not fully wired for brake controller installation and the # ETBC7, brake controller installation kit is the easiest way to install 7-Way wiring and brake controller wiring on the FJ. We have 2 videos detailing this installation and detailed instructions, see links, that should be helpful if you find that the connector under the dash is not operational or is not the correct mating connector.
