How Does Trailer Length Affect Towing

Question:

Assuming a trailer is within all weight specs of manufacturer...how does the LENGTH affect the towability? Currently towing 23 foot TT with 2015 Jeep GC EcoDiesel.

There isn't a specific ratio for determining a sweet spot but in general the longer the trailer and shorter the wheelbase on the tow vehicle the more sway you're going to have during travel. A 23 foot long trailer isn't terribly long but you're still likely to have some sway issues with your Jeep.

The best way to reduce this is with a sway control device, either with a simple friction sway control bar like the Curt # 17200 or better yet a complete weight distribution system that features integrated sway control. A properly rated weight distribution system will drastically improve the overall comfort of towing by not only reducing sway but also re-distributing weight over the axles of the trailer and Jeep for a more stable setup.

If you can tell me what the loaded tongue weight is on the trailer you plan on towing I will be happy to recommend a specific system. In the meantime though I have attached a great article on weight distribution that you might find helpful.

Other than this you will just have to be mindful of making those sharper turns and maneuvers with longer trailers. This is the case regardless of what vehicle you're towing it with.
