Hitch for 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon with Best Ground Clearance

Question:

This hitch was recommended for my 2011 Outback but based on the configuration I would like to know where and how to mount the wiring mount for my wiring harness plug? Since the receiver protrudes below the crossbar which is essentially inside the bumper what would you suggest as I do not want the wire coming out of the hatch? If you have a photo that would be very helpful. Thanks

For your 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon the best hitch for ground clearance is the Curt # C13410 which fits very tightly to the rear bumper of the vehicle but also doesn't have a crosstube that hangs below the bumper either which helps with ground clearance on uneven terrain as the only thing that hangs down is right in the middle. This has 1/2 inch better ground clearance than the Draw Tite that also fits.

I attached a picture of what it looks like installed as well as an install video for you to check out.

For trailer wiring you'll want the part # 118467 for your Outback as this is the easiest to install and most reliable option. This kit actually stores inside the rear cargo area when not in use and when needed comes out of the rear hatch like what you see in the attached picture. It may not seem like it but this is actually the preferred method as it allows you to keep the trailer wiring away from the elements when not in use. This prevents you from having to worry about corrosion developing on the pins which notoriously gives people trouble. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
