Difference Between Kodiak Disc Brake Kits

Question:

I have a tandem axle shorelandr pontoon bunk trailer with drum brakes and I am going to do a conversion to the disc brakes. The ID tag shows the trailer has 2960 lb axles and was wondering which kit would be the best choice, the K2HR2D or K2HR35D-8 kit? Also would I need short flex brake hose to adapt from my steel brake line to the new caliper? What is the difference between the two kits? Assuming spindle diameter?

There are major differences between the brake kits you mentioned, with the most important being fit and braking power. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR2D is designed for 2,000 lb axles and will require your current hub have inner and outer bearing parts L44649, with a grease seal diameter of 1.500 inches. When you remove your current hub and drum you need to take a look at your bearings and they should have the part number stamped right on them. That will let you know the correct kit you need.

The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D-8, on the other hand, is for 3,500 lb axles and will work so long as your inner bearing is L68149 and outer bearing is L44649 with a grease seal inner diameter of 1.719 inches. I recommend going with 3,500 lb rated brakes to ensure you have the needed stopping power. If neither of these kits fit your spindle I have added a link to our selection of hub and rotor disc brake kits for you to check out.

In regards to your hoses there are a difference between disc and drum brakes so you will need flexible lines at the brake caliper, the HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Tandem Axle - 25' # HS496-252.

Finally, you will also need an actuator for disc brakes such as the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-20; these actuators have a higher psi rating than do actuators for drum brakes, which is why a new one is needed.

I have added a link to our entire selection of disc brake actuators for you as well.
