Using Hitch-Mounted Carrier with Vehicle That Has Low Tongue Weight Capacity

Question:

So a vehicle like a 2017 Rogue with its low tongue weight is tough to use most hitch carriers since they eat up a good chunk of that carrying capacity with their weight? Also almost pointless to use any hitch adaptors like a rise/lower Rogues and many other compact CUVs receivers are low that rob these already small load carrying totals 50? When factoring TW do you have to add the 1 weight of the hitch bar mount receiver along with 2 accessory carrier weight plus your 3 gear or just 2and3? Thank you for your insight ET.

You are correct that both the carrier itself and the loaded cargo need to be factored towards the tongue weight that's being applied to your Nissan Rogue. The trailer hitch though will not count against this limit.

For vehicles like yours that don't have a lot of capacity to work with I simply recommend finding the lightest carrier possible that still offers the physical dimensions needed to load the cargo you plan on securing.

One of the lightest options we have is the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18100 that weighs just 29 pounds due to its aluminum construction. Its inside dimensions are 60 inches long, 19-1/8 inches wide, and 2-3/4 inches deep. It is compatible with 2 inch trailer hitch receivers and I have attached a short video demonstration you can take a look at.

If you don't yet have a trailer hitch on your 2017 Nissan Rogue I strongly recommend the etrailer.com Class III # e98846 that features a sleek hidden cross-tube appearance where only the receiver is visible, a unique matte black finish that offers a rugged look and prevents scratches, and is made right here in the USA.

I have included an installation video that you can use for reference.
