Safety Cable Recommendation When Flat Towing a Vehicle
Question:
number of safety cables should be used
asked by: W L
Expert Reply:
Safety cables are sold in sets of 2. You will need 2 cables when flat towing a vehicle. You will also want to make sure that the cables criss-cross beneath the tow bar. This is a safety measure so that the cables form a cradle that can catch the tow bar in the event it becomes detached from the tow vehicle.
You also want cables that have a listed capacity that is greater than the gross vehicle weight (the weight of the vehicle and everything in it). For a good set of 6,000 pound cables, I recommend # RM-643. These cables have a coiled design that helps keep them off of the ground.
Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual to determine any additional information or items that may be needed to tow the vehicle. I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you.
