Upgrading From 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tires to 145/12 Trailer Tires On Boat Trailer for Long Trip

Question:

In late August I will need to trailer my 14ft Carolina skiff 1200 mi to Florida. I looked at transport services but they want more than the rig is worth. My worry is the tires. I am currently using 4.8x4-8 bias tires I got from you. Would you suggest and upgrade for safety sake. I am guessing new hubs and tires would be ideal but am not sure how necessary that will be. thanks

The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30010 that you have now is a bias ply tire which is not my first choice for long highway trips as they will run hotter than the radial counterpart which then increase the chance for a blowout. If you have the space for a new larger, radial ply tire then this would be a wise upgrade for your 1,200 mile road trip.

The best option we have for this is the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel part # AM35351DX which measures 21.3" diameter x 5.7" wide so you will need to make sure you have space for this new size. Unfortunately, this tire is not offered pre-mounted with a galvanized wheel but the powder coated one will suffice.
