Under Hood Connections for a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500
Question:
Hello there, I have a 2002 gmc sierra 1500 with basic tow wiring. Need to install brake control and I have went and talked to people and all they want to do is charge me to look at it. Anyway I am real close I just need to figure out the wires under the hood. Does the both of them hook up to the studs, or does the blue wire need to be sent to the back?? I have already installed plug and play wiring harness from the brake control and took out the flat four in the back and replaced with 7 way everything works except the brake control needs power. I hope you can understand this jibber I am real close to taking it to the shop your my last chance.

You are very close and I am certain you can get it all wired correctly at home. On your truck there are some connections that need to be made under the hood to make everything fully functional. We actually have an FAQ article that covers brake controller installations on your truck, the different wiring situations you may encounter, and the connections that need to be made under the hood. I have included a link to it for you.
The blue wire under the hood does need to connect to the 7-Way trailer connector. If you end up needed to make that connection, use about 25 feet of wire # 10-1-1. Connect it to the blue wire under the hood and route it back to the 7 way where it will attach to the back of the 7-Way to the wire in the 7 oclock position. When routing the wire avoid hot areas and areas with moving parts that may damage the wire.
