Where do the Lift Brackets for Reese Weight Distribution Install on a Trailer Frame
Question:
1 How far back from the hitch do the chain saddles mount on the frame? I have a Coleman E1 tent trailer. I only have about a four inch space around 32 inches from the ball. The trail has a 6 inch frame which is on top of another segment on the tongue. There are plates welded for the two propane tanks and the battery. 2 A hitch with the 400-800 tongue weight seems ideal. Is there a disadvantage to getting a heavier weight range than needed. Just in case I get a heavier trailer later?

The center of the lift brackets will be about 30 inches back from the center of the ball hole on the coupler. The brackets are about 5-1/2 inches long. Based on the measurements you have given it does not seem like this set up will work for you. But I do have another option for you to consider.
You can use a system with chains but then use Chain Hangers, # RP58305. These hangers replace the lift up brackets and attach to the side of the trailer frame (trailer frame can be no wider than 2-1/4 inches). Then you would use the trailer jack to put tension on the bars rather than the lift bracket tool.
When you choose a weight distribution system, ideally you will want one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow PLUS the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If you calculated your tongue weight to be 600 pounds total, then a 400 to 800 pound system would be ideal.
Getting a larger system where your tongue weight is at the lower end is still a viable option. But, at the lower end of the tongue weight range you will experience a stiffer ride but it will still be safe. I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you.
