Parts Needed to Add a 4-Way and a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 1998 Chevy Tahoe
Question:
Ive been searching your site and reading a bunch. I just want to make sure I will be ordering the correct connector and harness. I have a 98 Tahoe and I have located a 4-wire connector/harness inside the area by the spare tire but also found a 5-wire harness below the fuel filler hose that does not have a connector. Can you tell me what the 5-wire harness is for? Can it be converted to a 7-way adapter? And in order to use a 7-way connecter, what is the best method? Thanks in advance.

The connection point for the Curt wiring harness, # C55319, is along the inside of the left (driver side) rear frame rail. The wiring harness will plug in line with the factory harness. I have included a link to the installation details for you along with a link to a video that shows a typical installation on a similar vehicle. Regarding the other harness that you have found I do not have any information on its function.
To add a 7-Way trailer connector, you will need to use # ETBC7. This kit will provid everything you will need to add a 7-Way and it also includes wiring needed to hardwire in a brake controller. Installation is not very difficult but there are several steps. I have included links to an FAQ article and a video that explain the installation of an ETBC7.
If you are also looking to add a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use.
